UniKL MICET won gold medal at the Malaysia Technology Expo (MTE 2020)

UniKL MICET won gold medal at the Malaysia Technology Expo (MTE 2020) that was held in PWTC Kuala Lumpur on 20-22 February 2020, which saw the participation of international research community. The project entitled “Phomopsidione: A novel antibiotic against Pseudomonas pneumonia” lead by Dr Tong Woei Yenn received recognition for the category Healthcare, Personal Care Technology, Biotechnology and Life Sciences. The team members are Dr Leong Chean Ring, Dr Syarifah Ab Rashid and Siti Zubaidah Abdullah.

The project is on the discovery of a new antibiotic compound, Phomopsidione that showed significant inhibitory activity on several Gram negative bacteria, particularly Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The compound is able to reduce the amount of toxins produced by the bacterium, by influencing the synthesis of outer membrane proteins.

The annual international exhibition was participated by over 500 participants this year. MTE 2020 provided a one stop platform for inventors, designers and entrepreneurs to showcase their latest inventions, ideas, prototypes, products and designs to investors, manufacturers, distributors and marketers in Asia and beyond, paving the way to connect them with those who are seeking new ideas, as well as technology commercialisation and collaboration.
